There are two types of Software Application:
- Web Application
- Desktop Application
Web applications are those applications can be access by using some browser. It is of two types:
- 3 – Tier
- N – Tier
3 – Tier:
The Presentation Layer, Business Layer & Database layer will present in 3 different systems. So it is called as 3 – Tier Architecture Application.
N – Tier:
It is same as like 3 – Tier Architecture Applications but it contains more number of Servers and Databases based on the number of users.
The Business logic will be distributed among the Servers & Databases based on the request.
These applications can be accessed without any browser as mobile applications.
Example – Skype, notepad, chat applications etc.
It is of two types:

1 – Tier:
All Presentation Layer, Business Layer & Database Layer will be available in a single system and these applications are limited to that specific system only. Hence we call it as 1 – Tier architecture applications.
2 – Tier:
Presentation Layer will be available in one system. It is also known as client. The Server and Database layer will be available in another system with the help of LAN or WAN. We can able to access these applications. It is also known as client / server architecture application.
